Azizur Rahman Musabbir was killed on the instructions of underworld criminal Binash Dada alias Dilip over extortion and turf disputes in Karwan Bazar, DMP Additional Commissioner and Detective Branch (DB) chief Shafiqul Islam has said.
He disclosed the information at a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police media centre on Saturday. DB chief Shafiqul Islam claimed that eight to nine extortion groups are active around Karwan Bazar.
The name of Binash Dada has surfaced as the alleged mastermind behind the killing of Musabbir, former general secretary of BNP’s Swechchasebak Dal (Dhaka North) unit.
Rahim, a key suspect in the Musabbir murder case, was arrested from Narsingdi, and two foreign pistols, magazines, and 12 rounds of ammunition used in the killing were recovered.
According to DB, shooters Rahim and Jinnat directly carried out the killing mission under Dilip’s orders.
After Musabbir’s murder, several shopkeepers in front of Bashundhara City Shopping Mall reported receiving threatening calls from multiple foreign phone numbers under this identity.
Three of them filed general diaries (GD) at Tejgaon Police Station seeking protection, but police could not assure their safety. They left Dhaka with their families. Call recordings suggest the caller identified himself as an “underworld dada.”
Tejgaon Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Kyshainu Marma told TIMES of Bangladesh that investigations are underway into the GDs, and authorities are verifying whether the name Dilip is real or fake.
Who is Binash Dada?
Businessmen from Karwan Bazar and Bashundhara City said they have heard the name Binash Dada alias Dilip, currently abroad, for about a year but have never seen him. Calls from foreign numbers under this identity demanded extortion money and issued threats.
In December 2024, Dilip’s men allegedly demanded extortion from 50–60 shops in front of Bashundhara. When payments were refused, bombs were detonated and several shops were set on fire. A businessman named Aman filed a case against Dilip’s close associate Sumon at Tejgaon Police Station but later withdrew it after receiving death threats.
After Musabbir’s murder on 7 December, four businessmen including Akhtar, Roni, Milon, and Sagar reported receiving abusive calls from foreign numbers claiming to be Dilip. The caller threatened: “We killed your brother, we will kill you too.”
Three of them filed GDs. On 10 December, footpath traders were given a foreign number to contact “Dilip Dada.” When informed, Tejgaon police advised them to remain cautious, saying security could not be guaranteed. DB’s ADC Murshed reportedly gave similar advice.
DB Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam confirmed that Dilip is an underworld criminal. According to police sources, Dilip hails from Kishoreganj district and was once active in Dhaka’s Kathalbagan area.
Arrests in Musabbir murder case
On 7 January, Musabbir was shot dead behind Star Hotel in Karwan Bazar. The next day, his wife Suraiya Begum filed a murder case against four to five unidentified suspects.
Police have so far arrested five accused, including Jinnat, 24, Abdul Kadir, 28, and Mohammad Riaz, 32. They were remanded by court order and are currently in jail. Jinnat, Kadir, and Rahim are siblings.
