Amazon Prime Video has confirmed a major casting choice for its long-gestating live-action adaptation of ‘God of War’, with Ryan Hurst set to take on the role of Kratos.
The announcement marks a notable return to the franchise for Hurst, who previously voiced the Norse god Thor in the hit video game ‘God of War: Ragnarök’. This time, however, he steps into the central role of Kratos, the Spartan warrior turned god whose story anchors the globally popular gaming series.
The television adaptation will draw from the narrative of the two most recent God of War games, focusing on Kratos’ journey as a reluctant father to his young son Atreus. The series follows the pair as they travel to fulfil the final wish of Kratos’ wife, Faye, scattering her ashes while navigating a world shaped by myth, loss and violence. At its core, the story explores Kratos’ struggle to guide his son towards becoming a better god, even as Atreus challenges his father to reclaim his humanity.
Hurst is best known for his performances in long-running television dramas, including FX’s ‘Sons of Anarchy’, where he played fan favourite Opie, and AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’, in which he portrayed the antagonist Beta. His film credits include ‘Remember the Titans’, ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and ‘We Were Soldiers’. He is also set to appear in Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’.
The God of War series has been in development since Amazon first greenlit the project in 2022. Following creative changes behind the scenes, Ronald D Moore took over as showrunner in late 2024. Moore is leading the series through his Tall Ship Productions banner, with Frederick E O Toye directing the opening episodes.
The production is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, alongside PlayStation Productions. A release date has yet to be announced, but casting Kratos signals a significant step forward for one of streaming’s most anticipated video game adaptations.
