Bangladesh cricket is facing unrest as players demand the resignation of M Najmul Islam and decide to boycott matches. The situation has drawn a strong response from ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who spoke openly against the recent remarks made by a senior board official.
Miraz said the comments were painful for players and embarrassing for the entire sports community. He made it clear that such words should not come from someone holding a responsible position.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Miraz reminded everyone of the role of the board. “We always say the board is our guardian. If they make such comments, it is disappointing for us,” he said.
He also said the issue should not be seen as a personal matter. “This is not just personal. It is shameful for the sporting community,” Miraz said. He added that he could not explain how such a comment was made. “I do not know whether it was said knowingly or unknowingly. I have no explanation for it. He knows best. From his position, such a comment was not right,” he said.
Miraz then addressed a common belief among fans. He said players are often told after poor performances, “You run on our money.” He rejected that idea clearly. “That is not how it actually works,” he said.
He explained that most of the players’ income comes from the ICC and sponsors. He also said the current financial strength of the Bangladesh Cricket Board exists because of the national team. “The money the board has today includes the contribution of every match played wearing the Bangladesh jersey,” Miraz said. He added that the money is the result of everyone’s hard work. “Everyone has a rightful share in it,” he said.
Miraz stressed that the board’s position depends on cricket being played. “Because cricket is being played, the board is in a good place. If there is no cricket, sponsors will not come and revenue from the ICC will not come either,” he said.
On criticism, Miraz said it is part of a player’s life. “We always try to play well. We are always criticised. There is no player who has not been criticised after failing to perform,” he said.
He also cleared another misunderstanding. Miraz said many people think cricketers are paid by the government. “Many think we get money from the government. No, we earn all our money by playing on the field,” he said.
Miraz ended by pointing out that players pay a large amount in taxes. “From what we earn, we pay 25 to 30 percent in income tax to the government,” he said.
