Hearings on appeals over nomination decisions begin today

The Election Commission (EC) will begin hearings on appeals challenging returning officers’ decisions regarding the acceptance and rejection of nomination papers for the 13th National Parliamentary Election on Saturday.

Ruhul Amin Mallik, director of the EC’s Public Relations Wing, disclosed the information on Friday afternoon, saying a total of 645 appeals have been filed with the commission.

According to the EC, the hearings will start at 10am on Saturday and will continue until 18 January.

Appeals numbered 1 to 70 will be heard on Saturday. On Sunday appeals 71 to 140 will be taken up, followed by appeals 141 to 210 on 12 January and 211 to 280 on 13 January.

The schedule for hearing the remaining appeals will be announced later.

All hearings will be held daily from 10am to 5pm at the auditorium of the Election Commission building in Agargaon, Dhaka.

The EC began accepting appeals on 5 January, with the submission process concluding on Friday. A total of 176 appeals were filed on the final day alone.

As per the election schedule, electoral symbols will be allotted on 21 January, while polling is scheduled to take place on 12 February.
