BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Tuesday announced the death of his mother, party Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, paying tribute to her life, leadership and enduring role in the country’s political history.

In a message posted on Facebook, Tarique Rahman wrote that Khaleda Zia had “responded to the call of Almighty Allah and left us today,” adding the Islamic expression of condolence, Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.

Reflecting on her public life, he described Khaleda Zia as a towering national figure. “To many, she was the leader of the nation, an uncompromising leader, the Mother of Democracy, the Mother of Bangladesh,” he wrote, noting that the country mourns the loss of a leader who shaped its democratic aspirations.

Speaking on a personal note, he described her as a devoted mother who dedicated her life to the nation and its people. Tarique Rahman said throughout her life, she stood against autocracy and domination, leading movements for freedom, sovereignty and the restoration of democracy.

He also highlighted her role within the family, describing her as a steadfast guardian whose love and resilience provided strength during difficult times.

Referring to her repeated arrests, denial of medical care and what he termed relentless persecution, Tarique Rahman said her courage remained unbroken even amid pain and confinement.

Recalling her personal sacrifices, he wrote that Khaleda Zia lost both her husband and a child in the course of her political journey, adding that the people of Bangladesh ultimately became her family and purpose.

He said she leaves behind a legacy of patriotism, sacrifice and resistance that would endure in the nation’s democratic conscience.

Concluding his message, he sought prayers for his mother and expressed gratitude for the sympathy shown by people at home and abroad, saying his family remained deeply thankful for the love and respect extended to them.
