Ataur Rahman Bikrampuri, a religious speaker and political commentator, has been sent to Kashimpur Central Jail-1 in Gazipur following a three-month detention order issued by the home ministry.
Tongi East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan said the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Ataur Rahman under the ministry’s detention order and handed him over to the police station.
On Wednesday morning, he was transferred to the central prison.
Ataur Rahman, who has recently drawn public attention over a series of reportedly controversial incidents, was arrested on Tuesday night.
Earlier, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed that Ataur Rahman was arrested from Narsingdi at the request of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) and subsequently handed over to GMP for further legal proceedings.
Kashimpur Central Jail-1 Superintendent Abu Nur Mohammad Reza said Ataur Rahman Bikrampuri was sent to the prison on Wednesday morning and is currently in custody.
