The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested Maulana Ataur Rahman Bikrampuri, a religious speaker and political commentator, from Narsingdi, following a request from the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP).
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrest on Wednesday around 1:30pm. He said Ataur Rahman was detained by the DB in Narsingdi based on a formal requisition from GMP.
According to the DMP spokesperson, a three-month detention order had been issued against Ataur Rahman, prompting GMP to seek assistance from the DMP.
Ataur Rahman, who has recently drawn public attention over a series of reportedly controversial incidents, was arrested on Tuesday night and later handed over to the Gazipur Metropolitan Police for further legal proceedings.
Police officials, however, could not immediately confirm whether any specific cases have been filed against him or the exact allegations leading to his detention.
Following the arrest, supporters and followers of Ataur Rahman Bikrampuri took to social media, particularly Facebook, to share posts regarding the incident.
Some of his followers claimed that he was detained while traveling by bus from Bhairab, alleging that the bus was stopped and he was taken away in a microbus.
