Indonesia fast bowler Gede Priandana created a piece of cricketing history on Tuesday, becoming the first player to take five wickets in a single over in a men’s international T20 during his side’s win over Cambodia.
The extraordinary spell came in the 15th over of Cambodia’s chase of 168. At that point, Cambodia were 106 for five and still harboured hopes of competing. Priandana’s intervention ended the contest in the space of six balls.
The 28-year-old right-arm seamer struck with his first three deliveries to complete a hat-trick, bowled a dot ball with the fourth, and then claimed two more wickets with the final balls of the over. Cambodia managed just one run in the over, from a wide, as their innings collapsed. They were eventually bowled out for 107, losing by 60 runs.
Earlier, Priandana had opened the batting and scored six runs from 11 balls. Indonesia’s innings was anchored by fellow opener Dharma Kesuma, who struck an unbeaten 110 off 68 balls, including eight fours and six sixes.
While this was the first time such a feat has been achieved in international T20 cricket, it has occurred twice before in domestic men’s T20s. In the 2013–14 season, Al-Amin Hossain took five wickets in an over for a UCB-BCB XI against Abahani in Bangladesh’s Victory Day T20 tournament. Abhimanyu Mithun repeated the feat for Karnataka against Haryana in the semi-final of the 2019–20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Before Priandana’s spell, the record for the most wickets in an over in men’s T20 internationals stood at four, a feat that had been achieved on 14 occasions. Tuesday’s match marked the first time that mark had been surpassed on the international stage.
