The Prothom Alo office at Majampur Gate in Kushtia town was attacked and vandalised by agitated people at around 1:30am on Thursday night.

During the attack, the office signboard, doors and windows of a room and various pieces of furniture were damaged, while slogans were chanted, witnesses said.

Police said patrols have been intensified across the district to keep the law and order situation under control.

Earlier on Thursday night, agitated students and members of the public brought out protest marches in Kushtia after the death of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.

The protesters later blocked the highway by setting tyres on fire.

Vehicular movement returned to normal around midnight after the hour-long blockade was withdrawn.

Later, at around 1:30am, reports emerged of vandalism and arson targeting the Prothom Alo office and the homes of Awami League leaders in different parts of the town.

Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kabir Hossain Matubbar said he had received reports of violence and vandalism, but no written complaints had been filed.

“If any complaint is received, it will be examined and action will be taken,” he said, adding that police remain on alert to prevent any unrest.
