BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas on Wednesday accused the interim government of betraying the people’s trust over the past nine months, branding it a “colonial administration”.

Speaking at a youth rally organised by the BNP-associated bodies, Abbas warned that the government’s actions are jeopardising the country’s sovereignty and integrity.

“This government was once a symbol of public trust, but now it only shows contempt for the people,” said Abbas.

“Nearly 90% of those running the government are not even citizens of this country. They talk about reforms before elections, but if they couldn’t deliver in 9 months, they won’t be doing it in 90 months — or even 90 years.”

Raising concerns about national sovereignty, Abbas questioned the government’s silence and alleged dealings over Saint Martin’s Island and the New Mooring Container Terminal.

“I asked months ago for clarity on the situation in Saint Martin’s. Now there is talk of handing over our ports — for whose benefit? Foreigners?” he inquired.

He also linked the introduction of Starlink in the region to the Arakan Army, suggesting it may be used to support arms supplies through possible corridors.

“Even if there is only one youth standing, we will not let our sovereignty be compromised,” he said.

Abbas accused the government of widespread corruption and a failure to address key national issues. “They use corruption as an excuse when we talk about their work. But this government is rotten from the top — and the rot has reached the very bottom,” he said, warning that if the government stays in power any longer, its misdeeds could surpass even those committed by the Awami League.

Addressing recent extortion allegations, Abbas criticised law enforcement for inaction. “Why are the police not arresting those involved in extortion? This happening all across the country, but instead, they are trying their best to pin the blame on BNP,” he said.

He urged party leaders and activists to remain vigilant against such tactics.

Reiterating the BNP’s demand, Abbas called for immediate elections, saying it is the only way to prevent further damage to the country’s future.
