Hasan Mahmud ended Cameron Green’s long resistance soon after the Australian completed his century as Bangladesh moved one wicket away from ending the hosts’ second innings in Darwin.
Green fell for 104 with Australia on 278/9, leaving Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood as the last pair.
The Australian all rounder had kept his side alive with a patient century under pressure. He reached three figures from 192 balls, his third Test century and his first on home soil.
Green had started the fourth day on 44 and watched wickets fall around him. Mehidy Hasan Miraz removed Alex Carey, Beau Webster and Pat Cummins before lunch, while Taskin Ahmed dismissed Mitchell Starc for 18 after the break.
Green continued to fight and reached his century with two runs through midwicket. He then looked to increase the scoring rate as Australia tried to build their lead.
But Hasan produced the breakthrough Bangladesh desperately needed.
Green had just cleared the boundary before Hasan responded with a delivery around off stump that kept slightly low. Green tried to defend but got the ball low on the bat and chopped it back onto his stumps.
His 104 had taken Australia from a difficult position into the lead, but his dismissal left the hosts with only one wicket remaining.
The wicket also took Hasan to nine wickets in the match, leaving the Bangladesh pacer one away from a memorable 10 wicket haul.
