Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain made a composed start to his Big Bash League career, producing a tidy, economical spell on debut for Hobart Hurricanes against Sydney Thunder, despite finishing without a wicket.
Rishad was included in Hobart’s playing XI for their opening match of the season and quickly justified the call with his control and discipline. While wickets eluded him, the 23-year-old impressed with consistent line and length, subtle variations and noticeable turn, keeping the run rate in check.
There was added interest among Bangladeshi supporters with Rishad in action, and the Nilphamari-born spinner largely met expectations. He finished with three overs for 18 runs, conceding just one boundary and no sixes, a solid return on debut.
Hobart captain Nathan Ellis introduced Rishad in the fifth over, which cost six runs. He was even more economical in his next over, the seventh, giving away only four. Across those two overs, Sam Konstas and Cameron Bancroft managed eight singles and a double, while also playing out three dot balls.
Rishad returned for his final spell in the 13th over, which went for eight runs, including a reverse-swept boundary by Bancroft. He was not brought back into the attack after that.
The match marked Rishad’s Big Bash debut, making him only the second Bangladeshi cricketer, after Shakib Al Hasan, to feature in the tournament. Hobart had previously signed him for an earlier edition of the league, but national team commitments prevented him from playing then. The franchise renewed their interest this season, reportedly on the recommendation of former Australia captain and Hobart’s head of strategy, Ricky Ponting.
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Sydney Thunder posted 180 for six, powered by Cameron Bancroft’s 61 off 44 balls, Shadab Khan’s 34 off 24, and Daniel Sams’ 23 off 11.
