Lionel Messi was at the centre of attention in Kolkata on Saturday. The Argentina captain virtually unveiled a 70 foot statue of himself at Lake Town. The programme took place at the Hyatt Regency and was hosted by minister Sujit Bose.

Messi thanked the fans after the unveiling. He said “Muchas Gracias” and then spoke in Spanish. The moment drew loud cheers from those present at the venue.

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan later met the football icon. Messi welcomed him with a warm smile. He also signed an autograph for Khan’s son Abram. The two shared a short conversation during the meet.

Shah Rukh Khan also met other stars at the event. He greeted Luis Suarez and Rodrygo de Paul, who were present for the programme.

RPSG Group chairman Sanjiv Goenka also met Messi at the event. He is one of the main sponsors and also owns Mohun Bagan Super Giants and Lucknow Super Giants. During their meeting, Goenka gifted Messi a small Sa Re Ga Ma caravan. The gift included classic songs by Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Md Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle.

An exhibition match later took place in Kolkata. Mohun Bagan faced Diamond Harbour at the Salt Lake Stadium. Former footballers such as Shilton Pal, Arnab, Lalkamal Bhowmik and Mohammed Rafique featured in the match.

Before kick off, local singer Anik Dar performed for the crowd. Ravindra Sangeet followed his performance. Messi is expected to arrive at the stadium later along with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
