Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha in a deal worth £62.5 million, with the transfer now at an advanced stage.
According to BBC Sport, United are expected to pay the full fee for the Brazil international in three instalments across a two-year period. The first payment of £20.8 million will be made immediately upon completion of the transfer, with a second due at the end of the 2025-26 season and the final amount to be settled in the summer of 2027.
While Wolves are yet to receive a formal approach from United, sources suggest this is imminent. With Cunha’s release clause set at £62.5 million, Manchester United can bypass extended negotiations by simply meeting the clause’s terms.
Agreement on personal terms is also believed to be close, with both parties understood to be finalising the finer details of the forward’s contract. Well-placed sources have described the remaining steps as a “formality”.
Cunha, 25, joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in January 2023, initially on loan before making the move permanent. He has since made 92 appearances for the club and scored 33 goals, becoming a key figure in the Wolves attack.
He is widely expected to have played his final game for the West Midlands club in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Brentford. Following the match, Cunha took to social media to thank the fans and reflect on his time at Molineux.
“Individually it was the best season of my life,” he wrote. “All of this was only possible because of all the dedication and love I have for this club. I became the Brazilian with the most goals in a Premier League season along with Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Martinelli.
“I made mistakes and got things right, but always because I lived this club so much. All I ever wanted was to do the impossible for Wolves. Another one is over. And thank you for all the affection.”
If the deal is completed, Cunha would become one of United’s most expensive signings and mark a significant move by the club as they look to reshape their attack ahead of the 2025-26 season.
