A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on Jagadish Chandra Mandal, former executive director (Engineering) of Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (DESCO), and his wife Sabita Mandal in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption and money laundering.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order on Monday, following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Confirming the development, ACC Deputy Director and spokesperson Akhtarul Islam said the commission’s Deputy Assistant Director Md Al Amin sought the travel restrictions to prevent the accused from leaving the country during the course of the inquiry.

According to the ACC petition, Jagadish Chandra Mandal and others are under investigation for alleged bribery, amassing hundreds of crores of taka in illegal wealth, money laundering, and engaging in various forms of financial irregularities.

The graft body argued that the investigation is of significant importance to the state’s interest, particularly in the context of anti-money laundering efforts.

Furthermore, the petition noted that credible intelligence suggests the accused were preparing to flee the country, raising fears that their departure could severely hamper the investigation.

The ACC urged the court to restrict their travel to ensure a fair and uninterrupted probe. The court accepted the ACC’s reasoning and ordered a prohibition on international travel for both Jagadish Chandra Mandal and his wife until further notice.
