News of a Nancy Wheeler spinoff following ‘Stranger Things’ season 5 confirms the future shape of the Netflix franchise. After a long wait, season 5 volume 1 has arrived and its first four episodes have impressed both fans and critics. The opening set of episodes successfully reintroduced Hawkins and its characters without feeling overloaded, which bodes well for 2026’s animated spinoff ‘Stranger Things: Tales from ’85’. The interquel is set between seasons 2 and 3 and will feature new voice actors playing Eleven, Mike, Lucas, Dustin and Max.
When Tales from ’85 was announced, its return to the same era and characters seemed limiting. Yet season 5 volume 1 has shown how much happened off screen between seasons. Hawkins was placed under military quarantine, Robin became a radio DJ and Dustin turned from comic relief into an isolated outcast after defending Eddie Munson. With so many developments left unexplored, extra stories now feel necessary.
One of these is Stranger Things: One Way or Another, a spinoff novel by Caitlyn Schneiderhan. Subtitled ‘A Nancy Wheeler Mystery’, it follows Nancy and Robin as they investigate the disappearance of classmate Joey Taft between seasons 4 and 5. The book is expected to fill in further gaps the series could not address before launching into Vecna’s season 5 storyline.
However, this growing focus on interquels limits how far the franchise can expand. While other series such as Yellowstone broaden their worlds with prequels and sequels, Stranger Things continues to revisit the same characters, settings and timelines. Although this approach is original, it risks feeling like a way to resolve loose ends rather than build a wider universe.
