The government will extend full cooperation if any legal obstacles are identified regarding BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said on Monday.
He noted, however, that he is not aware of any existing legal restrictions preventing Tarique from coming back.
Speaking to journalists at his office in the Ministry of Law, Asif Nazrul said, “To my knowledge, no legal barrier currently exists. If there is any legal obstacle, relevant authorities may inform us, and we will extend maximum cooperation. We will also ensure his security to the fullest extent.”
He emphasised that the timing of Tarique’s return is a personal decision. “He alone can determine when the moment is right. I believe he will return when he considers it appropriate,” he added.
Addressing ongoing speculation about Tarique’s long absence, Asif Nazrul criticised such commentary as inappropriate.
“Many question why he is not returning, but I consider these discussions disrespectful. This involves a mother-son relationship, and whether Begum Khaleda Zia has offered any advice or whether Tarique Rahman has personal considerations is not for me to comment on. They are best positioned to decide when he should return and what actions should follow,” he said.
