The earthquake that struck Dhaka and other parts of the country on Friday morning has claimed at least six lives and injured 208 people, according to a press release from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) at 2pm.
Dr Moinul Ahsan, director of Hospitals and Clinics at the DGHS, said, “Emergency alerts have been issued to all hospitals. Full support is being provided to treat the injured.” He added that casualty figures are likely to rise as more reports come in.
Hospitals in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narsingdi, and surrounding districts are experiencing a significant influx of patients, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
At Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, three bodies have been received, including Rafiul Islam, a second-year student.
Ten other patients are receiving treatment at the hospital. Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) has admitted 18 injured patients so far, with doctors warning that more may arrive in the coming hours.
Hospitals outside Dhaka face heavy patient load
Tajuddin Medical College Hospital in Gazipur is managing the heaviest patient load, treating 72 injured patients, including 49 admitted and 23 discharged after initial care. Shreepur Upazila Health Complex has treated 53 patients, referring six to other hospitals while discharging 15 after primary treatment.
Narsingdi District Hospital has treated 45 injured patients, including three in critical condition who were transferred to DMCH for further care.
According to reports from multiple districts, many injuries resulted from panic during the quake, with people jumping from buildings, rushing down staircases, or being caught in crowds.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as hospitals work to manage the surge of patients and provide urgent care.
