BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said there is nothing to discuss about the Awami League’s programmes because the Awami League is not in the electoral race and its leader is also not there.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Thursday after a courtesy meeting between BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan.
Amir Khosru said the discussion with the EU ambassador primarily focused on how the BNP is moving forward ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the nomination process, and the country’s progress towards the election.
He added that the EU will assist the Election Commission, send observers, and also speak with civil society. “They want the election to be completed properly so that democracy can return,” he said.
Regarding the July Charter, Amir Khosru said, “The July Charter was signed after discussions and consensus. It is not clear why there would be anything more after that.”
Commenting on the Awami League’s lockdown programme, he said, “It is a matter of concern for law and order. The law enforcement agencies are expected to remain strict. They will need to take a stronger stance.”
He further said, “There is no reason to think that terrorist activities can be used to hinder the election. Election activities are going on enthusiastically across the country. There is no anxiety about the election. Anyone, not just the Awami League, can carry out terrorist acts. The government, along with law enforcement agencies, must take a strong stance.”
Amir Khosru added that there is no reason for concern. “They (the EU) are cooperating from their side to ensure the election is held on time,” he said.
