Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana has been fined 25 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the opening day of the first Test against Ireland in Sylhet on Tuesday, the ICC announced in a media release on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old pacer was found to have violated Article 2.9 of the Code, which deals with “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match.”
The incident occurred in the 27th over of Ireland’s innings, when Rana, after fielding the ball on his follow-through, threw it towards batter Cade Carmichael, hitting the pads even though the batter had not left his crease.
Along with the fine, one demerit point has been added to Rana’s disciplinary record. It was his first offence within a 24-month period.
Rana accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, meaning there was no formal hearing. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Sam Nogajski and Ahsan Raza, third umpire Richard Illingworth, and fourth umpire Tanvir Ahmed.
According to the ICC, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum of a 50 percent fine along with one or two demerit points.
