Fourteen platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed to maintain law, order, and security in Dhaka, and surrounding districts.
Among these, 12 platoons have been deployed in the capital. One platoon each has been deployed in Gazipur and Narayanganj.
BGB’s Public Relations Officer Shariful Islam confirmed the information on Wednesday.
Miscreants have been setting fire to buses and cars, and hurling crude bombs in different places throughout Dhaka and elsewhere in the country. These incidents have spread panic among the public.
Commenting on the matter, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Sazzat Ali told the media that there is no reason for alarm in the capital. He said a party, whose activities have been banned, is trying to create instability using social media.
Over the past few days, DMP has arrested 552 people in connection with crude bomb explosions, arson attacks on vehicles, and sudden processions in the capital. However, the majority of those arrested are from outside the capital.
Attacks are being carried out by people wearing helmets and masks. Minors are also being used for these acts.
Urging city residents not to shelter strangers, the DMP commissioner said to inform the police if anyone is suspicious before giving their vehicle to another or if a stranger is seen. More fires have been set in unprotected buses.
Meanwhile, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam issued a warning to foil any programme on the streets of Dhaka by Awami League. In a Facebook post, he wrote, “This is not 28 October 2006; this is July, forever.”
