Rishad Hossain’s development as a leg-spinner continues under the watchful eye of Bangladesh’s spin-bowling coach, Mushtaq Ahmed. Having already mastered the googly, Rishad is now working on learning the flipper and the slider to further expand his repertoire.
At the start of his career, Rishad was not particularly adept at bowling the googly. Over time, however, he refined his control and turned it into one of his most effective weapons. He displayed the delivery with confidence during the recent West Indies series, as well as in the Asia Cup earlier this year.
Now, under Mushtaq’s mentorship, the young spinner is taking his craft a step further. Speaking to the media after a two-day wrist-spin camp at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Mushtaq outlined Rishad’s next stages of progress.
“He’s already learnt the leg-break and the googly,” Mushtaq said. “Now he’s working on the flipper and the slider. These are important skills, but the most crucial thing for Rishad is to keep his basics right. When his fundamentals and process are solid, insha’Allah, he’ll be able to bowl five or six different types of deliveries.”
The special camp, held on 3 and 4 November, was organised by the BCB’s Game Development Department. Mushtaq worked alongside Shahid Mehmood and a group of local wrist-spinners, including players from the Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 levels.
Mushtaq praised Rishad’s recent performances with both bat and ball, noting his growing influence on young cricketers in Bangladesh.
“I think Rishad is an inspiration,” Mushtaq added. “He’s bowling really well and taking wickets for Bangladesh. When a national team player performs like that, everyone wants to be like him. You saw in the last match that he took a wicket with a googly, now every young spinner wants to follow in his footsteps.”
