At least eight people were injured in a clash between supporters of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in Baroipara area of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila on Wednesday night.
The confrontation, which occurred around 10pm, prompted an immediate response from local police.
Jamaat claimed that BNP activists, associated with the “Sheaf of Paddy” party, were seen distributing money to voters.
When local Jamaat members intervened, an altercation ensued, leaving six Jamaat workers being injured.
On the other hand, BNP supporters alleged that Jamaat members were distributing money and leaflets when a dispute broke out.
Two BNP workers, identified as Bhaskar Chakraborty and Selim Sheikh, were injured during the clash.
Advocate Mostain Billah, the election agent for BNP’s candidate Sheikh Manjurul Haque Rahad, accused Jamaat workers of attacking BNP members with sharp weapons.
He claimed the attack escalated the situation, leading to the altercation.
Sheikh Golam Masud, president of the Baroipara Union BNP, asserted that 8-10 Jamaat members had been going door-to-door distributing money and leaflets when BNP workers attempted to stop them, resulting in a violent scuffle.
Two BNP members suffered head injuries and received immediate medical treatment.
Bagerhat Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Masum Khan, confirmed that police responded to the scene swiftly, bringing the situation under control.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, with both parties calling for legal action.
