A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Malaysia’s Sabah state on Borneo island early Monday, according to US seismologists.
The US Geological Survey reported the epicentre less than 100km northeast of Kota Kinabalu, the coastal state capital, at a depth of 619.8km. The quake hit at 12:57am local time (1657 GMT Sunday).
USGS assessed the risk of casualties or damage as low. The US Tsunami Warning Center confirmed no alert was issued, citing the quake’s deep origin as a factor preventing tsunami activity.
Malaysia’s Meteorological Department, which measured the quake at 6.8 magnitude, said tremors were felt along Sabah’s west coast and in parts of Sarawak. Officials added they would “continue to monitor the situation closely.”
