A local BNP leader sustained bullet injuries in Dhaka’s Kalabagan area on Sunday night.
The injured, Shafiqur Rahman, 55, served as former joint general secretary of Ward-16 BNP in Kalabagan.
He is the son of late Mofidul Islam of Sidlai village under Burichang Police Station in Cumilla and currently lives on Madhumoti Road in Tongi.
The incident took place around 9:30pm in front of a shoe market opposite Bashundhara Shopping Complex under Kalabagan Police Station.
Shoe shop owner Monir Hossain, who took him to the hospital said “Shafiqur is a former joint assistant general secretary of Ward-16 BNP. He also works as a shoe supplier to roadside footwear shops in the area.”
According to Shafiqur, several local extortionists had been demanding money from Shafiqur for the past few days. On the day of the incident, the extortionists allegedly confronted him in the area, demanded money and asked why he was not answering their phone calls. At one stage, they shot him and fled the scene.
Shafiqur was later rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He sustained a bullet injury to the palm of his left hand, and they claimed that the bullet had passed through.
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the police camp at the hospital, said “A businessman with bullet injuries was brought from Kalabagan and is receiving treatment at the emergency department.”
He added that Kalabagan Police Station has been informed about the incident.
