Seven members of a family, including women and children, sustained burn injuries after a gas line leak triggered a fire at their residence in Dhaka’s Agargaon early Saturday morning.
The incident occurred around 4:30am at a tin-shed house located beside the Islamic Foundation near the Paka Market in Agargaon.
The injured Md Jalil Mia, 50, his wife Aneeza Begum, 40, sons Asif Mia, 19, and Sakib Mia, 16, daughter Monira Akter, 17, and granddaughters 6-year-old Eva and Esha, were rescued around 7:45am and burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where they are undergoing treatment.
Dr Sultan Mahmud, resident surgeon at the burn unit, confirmed the matter.
One of the injured was later moved to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Jalil’s son-in-law Arfan said the family was asleep when the explosion occurred. “A sudden blast engulfed the house. Neighbours immediately rushed to help and brought all six to the hospital,” he said.
He added that the family is originally from Talukpara village in Sherpur’s Nalitabari upazila.
Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident physician at the institute, said medical teams are currently treating and dressing the victims’ wounds.
“It is too early to determine the extent of their burns. Further details will be available after a full assessment,” he said.
Authorities believe the explosion was caused by a gas leak in the house.
