A 5.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Friday, sending shockwaves across large parts of northern India on Friday.
USGS reported that the quake’s epicenter was near Jurm, Afghanistan. Panic spread quickly as residents in Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, and nearby NCR areas fled their homes to safety. Authorities have confirmed no casualties or damage to property so far.
According to National Disaster Management Authority, eight people were killed and one child was injured when a house collapsed in Kabul following an earthquake in Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is no stranger to such seismic events, especially in the Hindu Kush region, which the Red Cross identifies as a highly active earthquake zone.
The country’s heightened risk is due to its position along the boundary where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. A significant fault line also runs through Afghan territory, including the area around Herat.
