A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Greek island of Crete on Friday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. No immediate reports of casualties or damage were confirmed.
The tremor hit at a depth of around 13 kilometres, about 11.5 kilometres southeast of Ierapetra, a city on Crete’s coast.
USGS said the earthquake struck at about 6:18am (0318 GMT).
Greece, whose islands attract large numbers of tourists, experienced multiple tremors in 2025. These included a 5.3-magnitude earthquake in June last year, which damaged at least three centuries-old monasteries in the religious enclave of Mount Athos in northern Greece.
