A total of 345 Rohingyas living illegally were detained during a joint operation in Dohazari of Chandanaish upazila in Chattogram on Thursday.

The detainees include 176 men, 86 women and 83 children.

The operation was carried out around 6am in the Burma Colony area of wards 2 and 7 under Dohazari municipality.

Sources said a joint team comprising members of the army, police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the upazila administration cordoned off the area from midnight on Wednesday.

House-to-house searches began at dawn, during which Rohingyas residing in the area without legal authorisation were identified and detained.

Chandanaish Police Station Officer in Charge Md Ilias Khan confirmed the matter to TIMES of Bangladesh around 7:30pm on Thursday.

He said the 345 Rohingyas detained from the Burma Colony area include men, women and minors.

Following due legal procedures, arrangements have been made to send them to designated Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar under the supervision of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner, he added.
