Police have detained three people in connection with the killing of the general secretary of the Nabodoy Housing Unit BNP in the capital’s Adabar area.
The detainees have been identified as Shoaib, Arman and Nayan.
Confirming the matter to TIMES of Bangladesh, Officer-in-Charge of Adabar Police Station Zahidul Islam said the incident took place during an arbitration (salish) meeting in the Nabodoy Bazar area, following tensions that reportedly arise from a dispute linked to football World Cup viewing.
He said the detainees were present at the scene during the incident, and drives are ongoing to arrest other suspects involved in the killing.
The victim, Abul Bashar Badsha, served as general secretary of the Nabodoy Housing Unit BNP. Another leader of the same unit president Saddam Hossain was injured in the attack.
According to local sources, the conflict began two days earlier over an altercation related to watching a Brazil football match, which later escalated into vandalism of shops in the area.
An arbitration meeting was later convened on Wednesday evening to resolve the dispute over the shop vandalism.
The rival group, reportedly angered by the meeting, attacked Saddam and Badsha with locally made weapons, leaving them critically injured.
Around 12:30am on Thursday, doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared Badsha dead.
