At least 25 people were injured in a violent clash involving gunfire that broke out between two rival groups over the distribution of meat on Eid day in Kalia upazila of Narail.
Kalia Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Hasanul Kabir confirmed the matter.
According to local sources, a long-standing dispute over local dominance had existed between the Sheikh and Molla clans. This rivalry was reignited on the day of Eid, following an altercation regarding the sharing of meat at around 8:30pm.
The tension escalated on Monday night when both sides engaged in a clash using domestic weapons and firearms. The victims are undergoing treatment at Narail District Hospital and various hospitals in Khulna.
Alok Kumar Bagchi of the hospital’s emergency department stated, “14 people received treatment at the district hospital following the clash in Kalia. Pellets were found in their bodies. We have provided them with the necessary medical care, and everyone is out of danger.”
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Kalia Circle) Robin Haldar said, “Additional police have been deployed in the area, and the environment is currently calm.” He added that 14 people were detained during police raids, and the process of taking further legal action is ongoing.
