The Election Commission has identified 21 lakh deceased individuals in the updated voter list, many of whom have reportedly cast votes in the past.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin made the statement on Monday while speaking to the media at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.
The CEC emphasised that the EC is committed to delivering a free, fair, and impartial 13th national parliamentary election, stressing that this commitment is more than mere rhetoric.
“The role of the media is crucial in ensuring a smooth and credible election. We want the media to act as our partner. They can also play a key role in combating misinformation and fake news,” he said.
Regarding expatriate voters, the EC will ensure their voting rights and aims to conduct the election in a transparent and mirror-like manner.
“Without media cooperation, it is impossible to create a level playing field or a favourable electoral environment. We urge everyone to support the process. Electronic media also has a responsibility to prevent the misuse of artificial intelligence,” the CEC added.
He further stated that arrangements will be made for government employees serving abroad to vote.
“Nearly 10 lakh government officials will now be included in the voting process. We aim to conduct this exercise with full transparency and fairness, involving everyone,” he said.
