A bus crash on the coastal road linking Dahab and Nuweiba in Egypt’s South Sinai governorate killed at least 21 people and injured more than 20 others on Wednesday morning, the Ministry of Health and Population said.
The route runs along the eastern shore of the Sinai Peninsula, an area lined with Red Sea resorts that draws large numbers of tourists, according to Al Jazeera.
Several Jordanians were among those killed and injured in the crash, Jordan’s foreign ministry said, citing initial reports. Jordanian state media later reported that 10 of the dead were Jordanian nationals, out of 43 people who had been travelling on the bus, 22 of them Jordanians.
Twenty ambulances were sent to the scene to evacuate and treat the injured, according to Health Ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar.
Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar instructed medical facilities to step up their level of readiness and ensure the injured received the medical care, medicines and supplies they needed.
Fatal road accidents remain frequent in Egypt. State statistics show that almost 6,000 people were killed in road accidents across the country last year.
Just last month, a separate road accident in the northeastern governorate of Ismailia left 18 people dead and 30 injured.
