A patient named Nazmin Akhtar (20) has committed suicide by jumping from Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s (DMCH) new building. She was admitted to the hospital’s Medicine department with various physical complications, including kidney and heart problems.
The incident occurred at around 7:45pm on Sunday. She died on the spot.
Nazmin was the daughter of Jalal Khondokar from Char Bishwas village in Galachipa Upazila, Patuakhali. She has a four-month-old son named Zubayer Hossain.
The deceased’s father, day laborer Jalal Khondokar, said that Nazmin was admitted to ward number 802 on the 8th floor of the Medicine department at Dhaka Medical a week ago. She had various physical problems, including kidney and heart issues.
She had been previously admitted two and a half months earlier for treatment. On Sunday evening, her father Jalal Khondokar went downstairs from the ward to collect drinking water. Shortly after, Nazmin sent her mother, Shilpi Begum, downstairs to fetch water as well.
While her father was on his way up, he saw a crowd of people below. Approaching the scene, he saw his daughter lying dead.
He further said that about 4-5 years ago, Nazmin married a youth named Rayhan from a neighboring village. A few days after the marriage, when she became pregnant, at seven months, her husband and his sister forced her to have an abortion. Physical problems started appearing in Nazmin from then on.
To date, her father had spent about Tk1.5 lakh on her treatment at various hospitals, with her husband Rayhan refusing to bear any treatment costs. Moreover, he would beat Nazmin. Due to these reasons, Nazmin would often speak in despairingly, stating that she could no longer go on.
Ward Master of the new building, Md Riaz Uddin, said confirmed that Nazmin was a patient admitted to the Medicine department. She had jumped from the 8th floor and landed on a private car parked in the parking area below, dying on the spot.
The hospital director has been informed of the incident. Additionally, Shahbagh Police Station has also been informed, he said.
