Two children died after drowning in Jaintiapur upazila of Sylhet on Friday afternoon.
Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Molla, officer‑in‑charge of Jaintiapur Police Station, confirmed the deaths.
The victims were identified as cousins Rafa Akter Maisha, 5, and Munna Ahmad, 4.
Family members said their uncle, Zakaria Ahmed, had gone to a nearby haor to graze cattle. The children followed him but were told to return home.
As they failed to return home, relatives searched the area and later found the two floating in a canal. With the help of locals, they were rescued and taken to a private hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead.
Fothepur Union Parishad Member Abdul Matin said, “The two kids were children of my two nephews.”
OC Mahbubur added that the families have applied to receive the bodies without autopsy. The handover will be subject to approval from higher authorities.
