The International Cricket Council is considering the inclusion of Bangladesh in the second edition of the Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy later this year after leaving them out of the inaugural tournament in 2025.
Cricbuzz reported that ICC executives approved plans for a 10-team competition during an online meeting earlier this week. The tournament is scheduled for November, although organisers have not confirmed the venue.
Bangladesh could join Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Ireland, the Netherlands, Scotland, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Papua New Guinea in the expanded event. Five of those teams hold Test status.
The first edition featured only eight associate nations. Thailand hosted the tournament from November 20 to 30 in 2025 alongside Scotland, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, Papua New Guinea, Namibia, Uganda and Tanzania.
Thailand won the title after finishing above the United Arab Emirates, Scotland and the Netherlands on net run rate. All four teams ended the tournament with the same number of points.
Women’s cricket has added several new ICC and franchise events over the last few years. India won the Women’s ODI World Cup last year after beating South Africa in the final. Harmanpreet Kaur captained the side during the tournament, which India and Sri Lanka jointly hosted.
England will host the next major ICC women’s event when the Women’s T20 World Cup starts on June 12 and runs until July 5. Bangladesh will face India, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa and the Netherlands in Group A.
The Women’s T20 World Cup will overlap with the men’s football World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Bangladesh could also host the Women’s Under-19 World Cup next year.
