Two seven-year-old girls, Susmita Debnath and Riya Das, drowned in a pond on Tuesday afternoon in Namajgar village under Mautala Union in Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira.
Riya Das was the daughter of the late Uttam Das, while Susmita Debnath was the daughter of Ram Prosad Debnath. Both were first-grade students at Namajgar Government Primary School.
According to Sudarshan Das, uncle of Riya, the incident took place when Riya’s mother, Bharati Das, took the two children to a neighbour’s pond to bathe. She left them near the pond and returned home briefly to bring clothes.
When she came back and found the girls missing, she immediately entered the pond to search for them. Locals later helped recover the bodies, which were taken to the upazila health complex. Doctors there declared both children dead.
Kaliganj Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident, adding that an unnatural death case has been recorded.
