Cavan Sullivan scored his first Major League Soccer goal at the age of 16 on Wednesday night, but Philadelphia Union still lost 4-3 against Orlando City SC in a high-scoring MLS contest.
The teenage forward played a key role in Philadelphia’s attacking display. He helped create the team’s opening goal when his pass released Nathan Harriel, who then assisted Milan Iloski.
Sullivan later opened his own MLS scoring account with a composed finish from Ben Bender’s low cross. The forward timed his run well and guided the ball home from close range.
The youngster already carries huge expectations after signing a professional contract at 14. He will eventually join Manchester City, and he has earned more minutes this season after limited appearances during the previous two campaigns.
Sullivan played only 224 minutes across the last two seasons. This year he has already logged 377 minutes and started four matches. Alongside his first MLS goal, he has also produced two assists.
The forward had already attracted attention earlier this season in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. He scored twice against Defence Force in that competition.
His brother, Ronan Sullivan, also remains a familiar name for followers of Bangladesh football after representing the country at youth level.
Despite Sullivan’s strong display, Philadelphia continue to struggle badly in the league. The club sit bottom of the MLS table with six points from 13 matches.
Philadelphia return to action on Saturday when they host Columbus Crew at Subaru Park.
