BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Prime Minister’s Adviser on political and industrial affairs Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Tuesday called for a temporary suspension of the ongoing Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations, citing the severe flood situation across the country.
Speaking to journalists during a visit to flood-affected areas in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram, Rizvi questioned the need to continue examinations amid the ongoing crisis and urged authorities to consider the difficulties faced by students.
“Would there have been any major loss if the HSC examinations were postponed for a few days? Students are having to cross floodwaters to reach schools and colleges for exams. The education minister should look into this situation,” he said.
Rizvi said it was distressing that students were struggling to reach examination centres due to flooding, with some facing serious risks while attempting to appear in the tests.
“I stand with the expectations of the people and urge the authorities to postpone the examinations immediately for a few days. Once the water recedes, the exams can be held again,” he added.
During his visit, the BNP leader also called on individuals and organisations to extend support to people affected by floods and landslides, stressing the need to ensure relief supplies reach those in need.
He said many families had lost livestock and other assets due to the floods, adding that preliminary estimates suggested damages of around Tk30 crore, though the actual losses could be higher.
Rizvi said the government was monitoring the flood situation continuously.
He added that the Prime Minister had already held virtual meetings with local administrations and civil surgeons to assess conditions in affected areas and provide necessary instructions.
