A total of 16 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in the Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi–Jhenaigati) constituency ahead of the parliamentary election to maintain law and order.
BGB members set up camps in Sreebardi and Jhenaigati upazilas on the night of 3 April, Sherpur District Election Officer and Returning Officer Mohammad Jahangir Hossain said.
He explained that since the constituency lies along the border, the army cannot operate within eight kilometres of the frontier under the law. “That is why the presence of BGB has been increased here,” he said.
The BGB will remain deployed from 4–11 April and play a key role in ensuring security during the polls scheduled for 9 April, he added.
The election was postponed earlier following the death of the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate. According to the revised schedule, voting will now be held on 9 April. Contesting candidates include BNP’s Mahmudul Haque Rubel and Jamaat’s Alhaj Masudur Rahman.
Sherpur-3 constituency comprises 17 unions and one municipality across two upazilas, with 413,377 registered voters set to cast ballots at 128 polling centres.
