The 13th Jatiya Sangsad resumed its first session for the second day on Sunday, beginning with a recitation from the Quran.

On Thursday, following the president’s inaugural speech to the new parliament, Speaker Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad adjourned proceedings until Sunday.

The first meeting of the Parliamentary Business Advisory Committee has decided that the inaugural session of the 13th parliament will continue until 30 April.

On Saturday, a meeting chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin was held in the cabinet room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban to discuss the schedule and activities of the session. It was decided that a total of 50 hours will be allocated for discussions on the president’s speech.

For this session, 468 questions have been submitted — eight for the prime minister and 460 for other ministers. In addition, 27 notices under Rule 71 for drawing attention and 97 notices under Rule 131 for decision proposals have been received.

According to sources in the parliament, Sunday’s agenda includes a question-and-answer session, notices drawing attention to urgent public issues, and discussions on the motion of thanks for the president’s address.

Questions will be answered relating to the Cabinet Division, Ministry of Science and Technology, Secondary and Higher Education Division, Technical and Madrasa Education Division, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Ministry of Social Welfare, and Ministry of Housing and Public Works.

Earlier, at the start of the first session, elections were held for Speaker and Deputy Speaker. Prime Minister and Leader of the House Tarique Rahman proposed the name of Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin as Speaker, which was approved by voice vote.

Barrister Kaiser Kamal was similarly approved as Deputy Speaker. Later, President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to the newly elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
