The court in Kishoreganj has sentenced 13 people, including 12 members of the same family, to life imprisonment in the case filed over murder of a businessman named Syed Ali in 2016.
Senior District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Nurul Amin Biplob pronounced the verdict on Thursday in presence of seven convicts. The court also fined each of those convicted Tk 10, 000, which, if defaulted, would result in an additional six months in jail.
Public Prosecutor of the District Sessions Judge’s Court Md Jalal Uddin confirmed the matter.
The convicts are – Abdur Rauf Alfatun, 69, Kalam Munshi, 64, Alauddin Member, 59, Azizul Haque Elam, 54, and Ayatul Haque, 52, – five sons of Late Abdul Karim of Deopur Kazlahati village in Karimganj.
This is in addition to convicted Alfatun’s two sons – Anwar Hossain Angur Mia, 45 and Haider Ali, 37, convicted Alauddin Member’s two sons- Roel, 39, and Russell alias Chhotan, 36, Alauddin Member’s younger brother Sohel, 41, Azizul Haque’s sons – Ashiq Ahmed Hridoy, 34 and Riyad, 32 and Abdul Qayyum’s son Zahirul Islam Kala, 44.
Accused Alfatun, Azizul Haque, Riyad, Ayatul Haque, Zahirul Islam, Kalam Munshi and Ashiq Ahmed Hridoy were present in the courtroom when the verdict was announced. The other 6 accused are absconding.
According to the case details, the accused had a dispute with Syed Ali, a grocer from the same village, over land.
On the afternoon of March 23, 2016, the accused attacked Syed with sharp weapon and sticks in Niamatpur Bazar in Karimganj, seriously injuring him.
Syed Ali succumbed to his injuries on March 29 while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Syed Ali’s his elder sister Parveen Sultana filed an attempt to murder case with Karimganj Police Station on March 25, which was converted into a murder case after Syed Ali’s death.
The investigation officer of Karimganj Police Station, SI Shahar Ali, submitted a chargesheet in the court on September 21 of the same year.
The verdict was announced on Thursday, 9 years and four months after the incident. The accused have been sent to jail after the verdict.
