A total of 1,237 conservancy workers of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) received financial assistance as Eid gifts on behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The assistance was distributed at a function held at Green Plaza of Nagar Bhaban, where Rajshahi City Corporation Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton handed over the grants as the chief guest, a press release said.

Each worker received Tk5,000, taking the total disbursed amount to Tk61.85 lakh. This is the first time RCC conservancy workers have received Eid gifts from the prime minister.

Rajshahi City Corporation Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his family, and conveyed condolences to the family of martyr Ali Raihan of Rajshahi and other martyrs of the July Mass Uprising.

He said the financial assistance was given as an Eid gift to workers who work tirelessly to keep the city clean.

He also thanked the prime minister, noting that such support had never been extended to cleanliness workers before.

He said he did not come to Rajshahi empty-handed and brought the prime minister’s gift, adding that the premier has high expectations and has instructed him to make the city more beautiful and developed.

He said former president Ziaur Rahman had initiated canal excavation programmes to boost agricultural production, while Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has now launched canal re-excavation initiatives that will benefit farmers nationwide.

He added that even before the ink of votes dried on fingers, the prime minister began implementing election pledges, including distributing family cards as a pilot project with a target to cover 50 million people over the next five years.

He also said allowances have been introduced for imams, muezzins and khadems, which he described as unprecedented.

He said the city corporation is a public service institution and assured that all civic services would be delivered with sincerity.

He added that ongoing development projects in Rajshahi will be completed and the city will be transformed into a clean, green, modern and liveable metropolis with everyone’s cooperation.

The event was chaired by Rajshahi City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Md Rezaul Karim, while Rajshahi City Corporation Chief Conservancy Officer Sheikh Md Mamun delivered the welcome speech.

Conservancy workers expressed joy after receiving the Eid gifts.

Worker Rajibul Islam said he had never received such assistance in his career and was very happy to get the Eid gift.

Workers Mariam and Sumaiya said they were worried about managing Eid expenses, but the assistance eased their concerns and would allow them to celebrate Eid properly.

Another worker Harunur Rashid said the Eid gift brought them great happiness and would further motivate them to maintain cleanliness.
