Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has vowed that no compromises will be made with any illegal activities or irregularities during the holiday period.

He also assured the public that all police units are fully prepared and working to ensure safe and comfortable travel for passengers.

The IGP made the remarks after inspecting the Gabtali Bus Terminal in Dhaka on Tuesday morning, where he addressed concerns related to the Eid journey.

“Every year, people traveling home for Eid face severe traffic congestion and delays, often failing to reach their destinations on time,” Fakir said.

“To tackle these problems, the government and the police have jointly held coordination meetings, and we are using advanced technology to improve road and traffic management.”

The IGP highlighted that certain areas, particularly major market locations and key intersections in the capital, are prone to heavy traffic congestion.

He stated that the police are working alongside local representatives and conscious citizens to reduce traffic bottlenecks in these critical areas.

The IGP also addressed the issue of traffic law violations, particularly by drivers and helpers.

“Many drivers are not familiar with traffic law, and behaviours like stopping vehicles in the middle of the road only worsen congestion,” he said. “With some basic awareness and common sense, these issues can be reduced.”

On the matter of overcharging by transport companies, Md Ali Hossain Fakir urged passengers to report any instances of excessive fares immediately.

“If there is proof of overcharging, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will take immediate action,” he affirmed. He also reminded passengers that ignorance of the law is not an excuse. “Every citizen has a responsibility to be aware of the law,” he added.

The IGP reassured the public that there are no security risks related to the upcoming Eid celebrations.

He confirmed that the police are actively working to manage traffic and ensure the safety of passengers on highways.

Senior police officials, including the Acting Commissioner of DMP Md Sarwar were present during the visit to the bus terminal.
