Twelve meritorious students from different departments under the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Dhaka have received scholarships from Japan-based Nagao Natural Environment Foundation.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan handed over the scholarship cheques at a programme held on Wednesday at the vice-chancellor’s conference room.
Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences Md Humayun Kabir, Botany Department Chairman Asfaq Ahmed, DU NEF Scholarship Programme Coordinator Muhammad Jabed Hossain and Geology Department Professor Md Anwar Hossain Bhuiyan were present at the event.
Addressing the programme, the vice-chancellor urged the students to play effective roles in strengthening social unity and maintaining peace and harmony, while working collectively to raise public awareness about environmental conservation.
The scholarship recipients are Jannatul Mawa Momita, Saeeda Farha Shahrin and Suhana Mourin from the Botany Department; Md Mazharul Islam from Fisheries; Jinnatul Islam Protyasha and Marufa Parvin Karina from Disaster Science and Climate Resilience; Joyita Saha from Microbiology; Md Tahsin Reza Ananta from Soil, Water and Environment; Sara Moni from Geography and Environment; Md Rajib from Meteorology; Monisha Dey from Oceanography; and Noshin Tasfia Muna from Zoology.
Established in 1989, the Nagao Natural Environment Foundation works to promote nature conservation in developing countries, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, and provides scholarships to university students pursuing studies in environmental conservation.
Each year, the Dhaka University NEF Committee invites applications from students of the two faculties, with recipients expected to pursue higher studies in natural sciences, gain knowledge on nature conservation and apply it in their future professional careers.
