Umme Aiman Snigdha (10), a child who was being treated for burns sustained in an explosion caused by a gas leak in Chattogram city’s Halishahar area, has died.
With this, a total of seven people, including four from the same family, have passed away.
Snigdha died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka around 2am on Wednesday.
Snigdha was the daughter of Sakhawat Hossain, a motor parts trader. Earlier, her father Sakhawat Hossain, mother Nurjahan Begum, and brother Shafayat Hossain had died in as a result of the explosion.
Shaon Bin Rahman, a resident physician at the National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery, confirmed Snigdha’s death. He said she died while undergoing treatment due to the spread of infection.
The explosion and fire occurred due to a gas leak in an apartment on the third floor of a six-storey building called “Halima Manjil” in the Halishahar area of the city around 4:30 am on 23 February.
In the incident, besides the four members of Sakhawat Hossain’s family, his elder brother Samir Ahmed, who lived in Portugal, Samir’s wife Pakhi Akhter, and younger brother Shipon Hossain were killed.
A total of nine people, including Snigdha, were hospitalised after being burned. Among them, seven have died. Currently, Snigdha’s cousins Ayesha (4) and Farhan Ahmed (6) are undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, a month after the incident, the investigation committees formed by the Fire Service and the district administration have yet to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
