At least 10 people, including an assistant proctor, were injured in clashes between students at Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) in Tangail over seating arrangements for a World Cup football match.
The clashes broke out around 10pm on Tuesday during the Argentina-Egypt match after an argument between students of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Food Technology and Nutritional Science (FTNS) departments.
Although the situation was briefly brought under control, fresh clashes erupted after the match, involving students from the ICT, FTNS, Statistics and Chemistry departments.
The violence continued until around 3am on Wednesday, during which students vandalised the university’s first academic building, smashing window panes and flower pots.
According to the Proctor’s office, seven injured students were receiving treatment at Tangail Medical College Hospital till Wednesday morning, while one critically injured student was admitted to Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur.
Assistant Proctor Abdul Kuddus was also injured and received primary treatment.
The university Proctor Monir Morshed said the clash was triggered by a trivial issue and that the Vice-Chancellor would discuss the matter with the students involved.
The campus situation has returned to normal, he added.
