Dhanmondi Model Police Station has arrested 10 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its associate bodies during an operation in the capital’s Dhanmondi area on Monday morning.

Based on a tip, police conducted a raid in the Satmasjid Road area around 6 am and arrested the activists red-handed while they were preparing to bring out a procession, according to police sources.

During the arrests, police recovered 15 caps with Jubo League monograms, eight vests bearing images of leaders and activists, and a banner reading “Sheikh Hasina will come, Bangladesh will smile.” Two buses and a private car used to transport the arrested individuals were also seized.

The arrested individuals were identified as Md Ibadul Islam (21), Milon Barai (20), Md. Sujan Sardar (26), Sobuj Dhali (28), Nipul Biswas (29), Samu Dhali (28), Ashok Dhali (30), Md. Souruv Hawladar (23), Md. Joy (28), and Mahbub Hawladar (40).

All arrested individuals have been produced before the court. Legal action against them is underway, police said.

The arrests came a day ahead of the banned Awami League’s founding anniversary, as police across the capital have intensified operations to prevent any public assembly or procession by the outlawed organisation.
