One in custody after an overnight incident that resulted in damage to the Ohio home connected to Vice President JD Vance, officials confirmed on Monday.
According to the US Secret Service and a spokesperson for the vice president, the Vance family was not present in Ohio when the incident occurred, reports CNN.
Images published by local media showed shattered windows at the residence.
A Secret Service spokesperson said an unidentified adult man was taken into custody “for causing property damage, including breaking windows on the exterior of a personal residence associated with” Vance. The incident took place shortly after midnight.
The episode comes at a time of heightened anxiety over political violence, following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in September and the June killing of Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark.
“I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home,” Vance wrote on X. “As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I’m grateful to the secret service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly. We weren’t even home as we had returned already to DC.”
Audio from Cincinnati Police scanners captured Secret Service agents reporting a “possible break-in” at the residence.
Moments later, scanner audio revealed that authorities had placed a person in custody.
The individual is being held on local trespassing and vandalism charges and will be questioned by the Secret Service, according to a spokesperson, who added that a federal investigation will also be pursued.
Officials are examining whether the suspect deliberately targeted Vance or his family, a federal law enforcement official told CNN early Monday.
Authorities said they do not believe the person managed to get inside the vice president’s home.
