BNP Central Publicity Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku has said the late president Ziaur Rahman made an unforgettable contribution to the country’s sports arena.
He made the remarks on Thursday morning while unveiling the trophy and inaugurating the “Shaheed Zia T20 Cricket Tournament” at Tangail Shaheed Maruf Stadium.
Syed Jamal Club and Tangail Tigers Cricket Academy contested the opening match of the tournament, which features 12 participating teams.
Tuku said Ziaur Rahman had been a sports enthusiast, adding that sports in Bangladesh saw notable progress during the tenure of former prime minister Khaleda Zia as part of that legacy.
He said BNP wants to take the country’s sports sector to greater heights in the future under the leadership of the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
He also said sports play a vital role in building a healthy nation and a drug-free society. For that reason, he said, the standard of sports at district level must be improved so that more talented athletes can emerge and eventually lead the national team.
The event was presided over by former district BNP member secretary Mahmudul Haque Sanu. Former district sports association general secretary Advocate Ali Imam Tapan, district sports officer Rafiqul Islam and Tangail United Cricketer Alliance director Abu Nasir Manik also spoke at the programme.
Among others present were district Jubo Dal convener Khandaker Rashedul Alam, former district Mohila Dal general secretary Advocate Momtaz, district Swechchhasebak Dal member secretary Saleh Mohammad Shafi Ethan and district Jubo Dal senior joint convener Zahid Hossain Mala.
